Meet the Lambs

Have your little lambs meet our little lambs: this is a popular event with the wee folk who are just learning about farm animals and prefer them pint-sized. This family-friendly event features our new lambs, but there will be plenty of other activities for children, including pond explorations and horse-drawn wagon rides.  Suggested Donation: $3pp.

A hike to explore the historical, cultural, social aspects of land changes in Vermont and at Merck Forest, along the Farm and Discovery trails. This hike will be of moderate difficulty and will take place weather-permitting; participants should have water & snacks, sturdy footgear, and be prepared for the weather.

This guided hike follows our Annual meeting and will be led by the Executive Director, Rob Terry. The route up to the Thoreau cabin will be of moderate difficulty, and will take place even if it's raining. Participants must be dressed appropriately for the weather with sturdy footgear, water and snacks.

Second Saturday Hike with Tree ID

On this staff-guided hike of moderate difficulty, participants will learn what trees are growing at Merck Forest and how to identify them using a dichotomous key. The hike will take place even if it's raining, so participants must be dressed appropriately for the weather with sturdy footgear, water and snacks.

Bats! Bats! Bats!

Learn about bats with a 45 minute presentation by Alyssa Bennett, Vermont's Fish and Wildlife state bat biologist, then walk up to farm to observe these spectacular animals perform their nightly acrobatics on the farm.

Farm Chores for Children

On Thursday afternoons through the summer, children (and their adult companion) may join the farm staff at Merck Forest & Farmland Center for daily chores. Youngsters may feed the horses, pick berries, collect eggs and perform other tasks. These farm-centered "workshops" are designed to introduce children to simple farm routines and products, and to meet our animals under expert supervision. These hands-on/hands-dirty activities are suitable for children ages 3 and up. Please pre-register early, because participation is limited.
