Game of Logging: Chainsaw Safety Training

Forest health in Vermont

Level 1 (5/25, 8am-4pm, tuition $180 pp) focuses on introducing the participant to precision felling techniques. Level 2 (5/25, 8am-4pm, tuition $180 pp) focuses on maximizing chainsaw performance. Successful completion of Level I is required. Optional housing for participants Friday and Saturday night at the Barn Cabins at the rate of $10/person/night. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Preference will be given to participants who enroll for both levels: individuals seeking only Level 1 will be placed on a waiting list.…

A hike to explore the historical, cultural, social aspects of land changes in Vermont and at Merck Forest, along the Farm and Discovery trails. This hike will be of moderate difficulty and will take place weather-permitting; participants should have water & snacks, sturdy footgear, and be prepared for the weather.

Raise the Roof at Clark’s Clearing Cabin

This guided hike follows our Annual meeting and will be led by the Executive Director, Rob Terry. The route up to the Thoreau cabin will be of moderate difficulty, and will take place even if it's raining. Participants must be dressed appropriately for the weather with sturdy footgear, water and snacks.

Farm Chores for Children

On Thursday afternoons through the summer, children (and their adult companion) may join the farm staff at Merck Forest & Farmland Center for daily chores. Youngsters may feed the horses, pick berries, collect eggs and perform other tasks. These farm-centered "workshops" are designed to introduce children to simple farm routines and products, and to meet our animals under expert supervision.
